Darcy Tromanhauser, Director of the Immigrant Program for Nebraska Appleseed, says the petition addresses the serious human rights violations meatpackers face on a daily basis. She says the two groups hope to have a hearing in October and prompt some proactive solutions by Congress.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad's office hosted the roundtable discussion in Council Bluffs. The Missouri river has dropped to flood stage in western Iowa as less water is released from Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota. It's left behind significant damage to homes, farmland, and public infrastructure.
Omaha, NE – The Salvation Army will hold a 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Remembrance Service this Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Susan Eustice, Director of Public Relations, says the service will last half an hour and will feature several special guests including the Mayor as well as Omaha firefighters and law enforcement. She says there will be a display of emergency response vehicles including fire trucks.

Project Interfaith is hosting a discussion on civil liberties and interfaith relations. The event is also an opportunity for Omahans of all faiths to reflect and discuss the impact of the September 11, 2001 attacks on their lives.
Omaha, NE – President Obama recently authorized a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for Public Assistance for six Iowa counties.
The declaration covers Benton, Clay, Dickinson, Marshall, Story and Tama counties for storms that happened between July 9th and 14th. John Benson, Public Information Officer for Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management says the declaration activates federal programs that are typically administered by FEMA.

Omaha Creative Week began Sunday. Shane Bainbridge is with the New BLK Gallery. He says the week is held to bring together the entire Omaha creative scene in a set timeframe. The week of events offers a forum for the organizations to step outside their normal routines, interact with other agencies and begin collaborating on unified projects.

Jack Heidel, the chairman of the mathematics department at UNO, announced his candidacy Wednesday morning in Omaha. Heidel says his background as a mathematician means he's uniquely qualified to deal with deficit and debt issues. "I am comfortable thinking in terms of billions and trillions of dollars, and I can address at a time when federal budgets are out of control, to have more people who can keep track of what this means."
