First-time CWS team Kent State holds off Florida for surprise win

Though one Cinderella team is out at the College World Series, the other one has pulled off an upset.  The Kent State baseball team held off the University of Florida, 5-4, Monday night to remain alive in the double elimination tournament at TD Ameritrade Park.  

In the late game, Arkansas beat South Carolina 2-1. The Gamecocks won the College World Series in 2010 and 2011.

Nebraskans for the Arts Reveal Study Results

Omaha’s arts and culture industry is one the city can count on, according to a new report released last week.

The Arts and Economic Prosperity report shows arts and culture provides for 3,400 full-time jobs, both directly and indirectly, in Omaha.  

Marjorie Maas, Director of Nebraskans for the Arts, says the city’s arts and culture organizations provided 89 million dollars worth of economic impact last year, making up half of the state’s 174 million.

Heat prompts Salvation Army to open four cooling centers

The Salvation Army of Omaha plans to open four cooling centers Monday for residents needing relief from the heat.

The centers are open from 11 am to 8 pm Monday and Tuesday. They’re at the Kroc Center at 28th and Y Streets, the North Corps at 24th and Pratt, The Council Bluffs Corps, and the Lied Renaissance Center.

Salvation Army officials say the cooling centers will be open whenever temperatures reach 90 degrees or more for at least two days.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s in the Omaha metro area Monday and Tuesday.

Two games scheduled Monday as 2012 NCAA Mens College World Series continues

Day four of the NCAA Mens College World Series begins at 4PM.

There are two games at TD Ameritrade Park Monday.  The first is Florida and Kent State. Kent State is one of two first-time participants in the College World Series. The other, Stony Brook, lost Sunday.

At 8PM, Arkansas plays South Carolina. The Gamecocks won the College World Series in 2010 and 2011.

This is the second year of the Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

One Iowa at Pride Event in Omaha

Pride Month celebrates the LGBT community and the progress the community has made towards full equality.  Omaha is the site of the Heartland Pride event on June 30th.  

Staff and volunteers from One Iowa will have a booth at the event.  Communications Director Molly Tafoya says the group will share information and talk with attendees about the impact the organization has had on equality issues.  She says one of the things that makes Iowa so unique is their leadership in the movement for LGBT equality in the Midwest.

Metro Transit Offers Stadium Circulator for 2nd Year

For the 2nd year in a row, Metro Transit will offer its stadium circulator service for those attending the College World Series

Marketing Director Linda Barritt says the stadium circulator connects the stadium with downtown hotels, public parking and the Old Market.  

The fare is .25 cents each way.  She says the circulator will operate throughout the day today for the opening ceremonies.

Election Commission Meets with Omaha Community Coalition

When Douglas County began its redistricting process, the election commission had a meeting with 25 people from the community who had concerns over the changes. Dave Phipps, Douglas County Election Commissioner, says the Omaha Community Coalition was formed from that initial group.  Phipps has met with the coalition three times.  He says the first meeting was a get to know you session to find out their thoughts and concerns.

2012 College World Series begins Thursday with opening ceremonies

The NCAA Men’s College World Series begins Thursday in Omaha with opening ceremonies.

It's the second CWS at T-D Ameritrade Park, and the 62nd Series in Omaha. South Carolina won the College World Series in 2010 and 2011. The eight CWS teams have open practices starting at 9:00 a.m. The opening ceremony is at 8:30 p.m. and features members of the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team.

The first three College World Series were held in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Wichita, Kansas. The first CWS in Omaha was in 1950.

Open house Wednesday in Omaha on annexation of eight Sanitary Improvement Districts

 

The city of Omaha could soon grow by 6,353 residents.

An open house Wednesday in Omaha gives residents in eight Sanitary Improvement Districts to be annexed a chance to ask questions and find out what services might change. The SIDs are Lakeview Heights, Pepperwood, The Colonies, Seven Pines, Walnut Lake, Standing Bear, Hillsborough Plaza, and Pegasus.

State Department Official Speaks to Students Tomorrow

Omaha native Meghan Mercier will speak at UNO tomorrow.  Mercier will share her experiences working as a Foreign Service Officer with the US State Department. 

UNO’s Political Science Department hosts the presentation.  Dr. Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado, UNO professor of political science, says Mercier’s visit is part of the Hometown Diplomats Program.
