Season tickets on sale for Omaha Performing Arts' upcoming season

Omaha Performing Arts offers five different series: Broadway, Dance, Family, Jazz and Showcase, formerly the Popular Series.  

Executive Director Joan Squires says several of the shows offered during this season’s Broadway series are coming to Omaha for the first time.  The season begins with Shrek! The Musical in October.  Squires says that’s followed by Billy Elliot in November.

OPS board to conduct another national search, name an interim superintendent

The Omaha Public Schools board will again conduct a national search for a new superintendent.

Board members voted unanimously Monday night to begin a new search. That followed a vote Saturday afternoon to accept the resignation of Nancy Sebring. She was set to become OPS' new superintendent July 1. Sebring resigned after reports surfaced that she sent and received sexually explicit emails from her official Des Moines Public Schools account.

The OPS board will also name an interim superintendent. Right now there's no timeline for that to happen.

Douglas County Board continues budget discussions with new fiscal year approaching

Douglas County’s new fiscal year budget is once again up for discussion Tuesday.

County Commissioners will discuss the budget at their 9am meeting Tuesday. Two weeks ago, Finance Committee members grilled county department heads on their budget requests for the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

The County Board asked all departments to present flat budgets, and justify any requests for additional funding.

County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the 2012-13 budget later this month.

Incoming OPS superintendent resigns

The OPS board accepted Nancy Sebring's resignation during a special meeting Saturday.

The Omaha Public Schools board will once again be looking for a new superintendent.

The board voted 9-1 Saturday afternoon, with two members absent, to accept Nancy Sebring's resignation. Board member Justin Wayne voted no. Sebring, the former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent, notified the board Saturday morning she'd resign following reports that she sent and received sexually explicit emails from her school district account.

Sebring was set to begin work July first, taking over for retiring superintendent John Mackiel.

Worker injured during construction of swim trials competition pool

A worker injured Tuesday while working on the decking for the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials competition pool could be released from the hospital today.

Swim Trials COO Harold Cliff says the worker was installing plywood on the deck when he slipped and fell. The worker, a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local Union 42, suffered a concussion and broke two fingers.

MECA spokeswoman Rebecca Kleeman says the worker was conscious when he was taken to the hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Construction on U.S. Olympic Swim Trials pools nearing completion

Construction on two swimming pools at the CenturyLink Center is Omaha is nearly complete.

Workers are building the pools in the convention center and arena for the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials. This is the second time Omaha is hosting the trials. In 2008, more than 1,200 U.S. Swimming team members competed in Omaha. This time around it’ll be 1,800 swimmers.

Swim Trials COO Harold Cliff says construction has gone smoothly, and both pools are on schedule. Once construction is finished, both pools they’ll be filled and heated.

Public meeting scheduled on Historic Parks and Boulevard Master Plan

The design and restoration of Omaha’s historic boulevards system is the subject of a public meeting Thursday.

Omaha Parks and Recreation has scheduled a 6pm meeting at the Elmwood Park Pavilion on the historic parks and boulevards master plan. Pat Slaven of Omaha Parks and Rec says public input will guide the development of the plan’s design, restoration, and enhancement initiatives.
