Douglas County Commissioners say taxpayers could be forced to pay more if the state of Nebraska does away with its inheritance tax.
During his State of the State address, Governor Dave Heineman told lawmakers he wants the inheritance tax to end. The inheritance tax is based upon the fair market value of a property at the time of a person’s death. The amount of tax paid varies depending on the relationship between the deceased and the person who inherits the property.

Senator Scott Lautenbaugh's bill had its first hearing in a Unicameral committee meeting Wednesday. In addition to cutting the board to five members from its current 12, the legislation would also pay board members $20,000 and limit them to two four-year terms.

The event takes place at Omaha's CenturyLink Center. Bev Carlson is PR Director for LFS. She says At Ease is a program that provides therapeutic support and trauma treatment for active duty military, veterans and their families. Funds raised from the luncheon will go back into the program.

David Crouse, a professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy at UNMC, is the guest speaker. He says issues related to radiation and radiation exposure have always been in the public eye. Crouse says there's a great deal of knowledge about radiation and its effects, but since radiation can't be seen, tasted or heard, the public is fearful of it.
Omaha, NE – The former chairman of the Douglas County Republican Party is seeking the GOP nomination for the Second Congressional District.
Glenn Freeman announced his candidacy last week. Freeman is the third challenger to incumbent Congressman Lee Terry in the Second District race. Financial Advisor and former Husker Quarterback Brett Lindstrom, and UNO mathematics department chairman Jack Heidel, are also candidates.
Freeman says his campaign will focus on the national deficit and state sovereignty.
Omaha, NE – It was one year ago Thursday that former Millard South High School assistant principal Vicky Kaspar was shot and killed by a former student.
The shooting happened January 5, 2011 at about 12:45 pm. 17-year-old Robert Butler Junior, who had been suspended, went to the school's administrative office to talk to Kaspar. He shot Kaspar and principal Curtis Case. Butler was found dead in a vehicle near the school a short time later. Kaspar died that evening and Case was seriously injured.
Omaha, NE – Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle says job creation and strategic planning are among his priorities for 2012.
In a video message released Wednesday, Suttle talked about the challenges the city faced this year, including Missouri River flooding and the downgrade of Omaha's bond rating. The rating was restored in early December.

Those are some of the results from 1,090 responses received during public forums and from an online survey. Consulting firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates used those responses to shape a leadership profile presented to the OPS board Wednesday.
