Construction on two swimming pools at the CenturyLink Center is Omaha is nearly complete.
Workers are building the pools in the convention center and arena for the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials. This is the second time Omaha is hosting the trials. In 2008, more than 1,200 U.S. Swimming team members competed in Omaha. This time around it’ll be 1,800 swimmers.
Swim Trials COO Harold Cliff says construction has gone smoothly, and both pools are on schedule. Once construction is finished, both pools they’ll be filled and heated.
Creighton University forward Doug McDermott is among this year’s first-team All-Americans.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association released its list Monday of All-Americans. All five first-team All-Americans are on teams playing in the NCAA tournament. McDermott joins players from Kansas, Ohio State, Kentucky, and Michigan State on the list.
UNO’s Athletic Department recently received a leadership gift from Brian and Carey Hamilton.
Trev Alberts, UNO’s Athletic Director, says the money will be used for a student academic success center.
He says the department’s focus right now is to look programmatically at how they can help students and coaches be successful at Division 1.
Alberts says the university’s move to Division 1 means more competition and accountability. He says that’s why it’s important that the department administratively supports the student-athletes and coaches.
The video board from Omaha’s landmark Rosenblatt Stadium will soon have a new home.
Burke High School will have the video board in time for the Nebraska state track meet May 18th. Bob Danenhauer, supervisor of athletics for the Omaha Public Schools, says it’ll cost $400,000 to locate the video board at Burke, which will be paid for with donations.
Omaha Press Club’s January Noon Forum featured Trev Alberts, UNO’s Director of Athletics.
Alberts started at UNO in 2009. Last year, Alberts’ plan to reclassify UNO athletics from Division 2 to Division 1 was approved by the board of regents. In July of 2011, Alberts secured a spot for the UNO Hockey Team in the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
