Iowa DOT 511 Mobile App Now Available

The Iowa Department of Transportation recently released a 511 traveler information app for both the iPhone and the Android. 

Sinclair Stolle, 511 Traveler Information Engineer, says the Iowa 511 app reports information on interstates, U.S. Routes and state highways. 

She says right now motorists can view traffic speeds from the DOT in the metro areas around the state, look at electronic roadway signs, and see still images from the DOT’s traffic cameras.  Stolle says currently traffic images are only available from six metro areas but will soon be statewide.

23 killed in motorcycle crashes in 2011

AAA Nebraska says deaths from motorcycle crashes are up 71 percent through June.

Last year, 23 people died in motorcycle accidents in Nebraska. AAA Nebraska spokeswoman Rose White says 12 people have died in motorcycle accidents so far this year, up from seven at this time in 2011.

White says Nebraska’s mild winter is partially to blame.  "For the first time in the history of Nebraska, we recorded a fatality during the month of January. With many motorcyclists out now for the last six months, we’ve seen a substantial increase in fatalities."

MAPA seeking comment through this morning

This morning is the public’s final opportunity to weigh in on the draft of MAPA’s 2013-18 Transportation Improvement Program.

Greg Youell, Transportation and Data Manager for the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency, says the TIP represents all federally funded transportation projects in the metro area.  He says transportation projects slated for Douglas and Sarpy Counties in Nebraska, and the Council Bluffs area in Iowa, are included in the TIP. 

Youell says it’s important for citizens to understand they do have an opportunity to give input on the selected projects.
